Farewell, Petal :o(

Darn it. One of the remaining elephants at the Philadelphia Zoo passed away. ( The elephant exhibit will close soon. One of our elephants was already sent to another location, and the remaining three were slated to be moved in a few months.)

I never knew that Petal, aged 52, was the oldest living African elephant in the USA. Farewell to the matriarch of the Philadelphia elephants. You will be missed.

P.S. You won't find a more avid champion of animal rights than I am. But the activist's comments that were quoted toward the end of the article were ill-considered, at best. What rationale is there for describing Petal's death as "premature" when she was the oldest elephant in the country, and in fact had survived several years past the average age of a wild elephant (45)? Object to "zoo industry" conditions, if you find it warranted, but to call Petal's death premature is simply not logical.
